The Elk Hair Caddis is one of the most time-tested dry fly patterns in trout fishing—famous for its simplicity, durability, and performance across a wide range of water types. Originally designed to imitate adult caddisflies, this high-floating dry is just as effective as a general attractor pattern when trout are feeding near the surface.
With a buoyant elk hair wing, stiff palmered hackle, and a clean, compact body, this fly stays afloat in fast riffles and turbulent pocket water. It's easy to see, easy to cast, and flat-out catches fish.
Whether you're matching a hatch or just prospecting in broken water, the Elk Hair Caddis is a must-have pattern that earns its keep year-round.
